Have you ever learnt a skill that came in handy for your personal need when you least thought about it?
Read how Emem Patrick sewed her own gorgeous wedding gown barely two weeks to her wedding and made herself up on her wedding day.
Emem Patrick is a graduate of Marine Geology from the University of Calabar, Nigeria. She’s the CEO of Emines stitches and Empress make-over.
A biblical proverb says train a child in the way he (she) should go... Emem started sewing at an early age. She could remember when she used to cut her mother’s wrapper and sew it with a needle and thread. While she was in secondary school, her mother saw the passion she had for sewing and bought her a sewing machine.
Again, at the University, Emem enrolled at a Fashion Design school. She also started receiving training in Makeup Artistry. Her motivation for enrolling at a Fashion Design School was to learn “how to sew to avoid an argument with tailors” she said.
Necessity is the mother of invention...
After her NYSC(a compulsory one year national service), she got engaged. Two months later, the pressure of running her fashion home and planning the wedding sets in.
Emem wanted to rent a gown she would wear on her wedding day, but after searching for weeks, she couldn’t find her dream gown, which is called the “mermaid gown”.
Two weeks before her wedding, she sewed her wedding gown herself. “Though it was quite tedious,” she said. Since she opted to sew the wedding gown herself, she was awake on most nights, but the outcome “gave her joy” she revealed.
Again, at the completion of the Make-Up training, she told herself that she’d be sure she did her wedding make-up herself. The reason? She is well acquainted with her facial structure and has understood it over the years. She was so confident that she’d be the only one to give her face the best look. And “I did!” she exclaimed.
